jakeyjakem whispered, "text: Clare my dad is finally happy...I can't do that to him. We'll just have to figure out a way to deal, we're both mature enough to handle this."

Text: We’re going to be siblings! There’s no mature way to handle this!  Jake, our parents are making a huge mistake. Don’t you see that?

jakeyjakem whispered, "text: Are you holding up alright?"

Text: Not really. They’re getting married, Jake. And my mom just got divorced. It’s just… It’s ridiculous. And stupid. We have to stop it somehow.

Clare could tell Drew was teasing but she pretended not to notice his blatant sarcasm. She smiled proudly, “Good, I’m glad it hurt.” The curse word fell from the boy’s lips and honestly, she wished it had fazed her in the slightest. But over the course of the three months she had spent with Eli, curse words came the least of her worries, especially since he dropped them so casually. She still managed to scourn him when she could and Drew was no different. She shook her head, hiding her grin as she sneered, “Andrew Torres! What would your mother say?”

Clare couldn’t help but laugh at the options he gave. “A yorkshire terrier? Who are you, Paris Hilton?” She teased, grinning up at him with their arms still locked. Brushing her bangs behind her ear, she sighed, “Maybe if you get the pitbull, your pup will have a chance against Max. Highly doubtful, but there’s a slight chance.” She looked up at Drew, a sly half smile appearing as she did so, “Plus, I think you look more like a pitbull than a yorkshire anyway.” She laughed at her slight insult, instantly letting go of Drew’s arm and quickening her pace a bit, rushing away from the boy before he could do or say anything in response.

Drew chortled when she called him Andrew. It was bound to come out during their time together. He allowed it though. It was out of anger or spite when she said it. Clare called him Andrew because she wanted to. “My mother would spank me until my a…I mean butt hurt. Drew snickered and looked at her wanting to know her reaction. He beamed as he shook his head. “Kidding. I’d probably have everything taken away from me.”

“Hey, hey, hey, hey. Woah, woah, woah, woah. A yorkshire is adorable. Have you ever seen the faces on those munchkins?” His eyes widened at what had been put out there. Drew Torres had said munchkins. He agreed with what she was saying. Before he could respond Clare was steps ahead of him. “Wait up!”, he ran after her trying to keep up. “Are you implying that I’m a dog?”

Clare heard the first syllable of what Drew was going to say. She expected it, too. She, herself, would never say such things. It even seemed crazy when she used ‘hell’ out of context to get her point across. But it didn’t bother her when others used crude language so much, as long as it wasn’t a common occurrence. She found it humorous how Drew was walking over eggshells in his speech though, so as he went on, she pretended to huff at his close save. She knew Mrs. Torres was strict but she was also aware that the woman would never beat her children, so she laughed, shaking her head, “Well, maybe you deserve to get everything taken away.”

At the word ‘munchkins,’ Clare slowed down, giggling a bit. “Did you just say munchkins?” So much for being the all around manly man that everyone had pinned Mr. Torres out to be. She slowed her steps down so he could catch up, but shook her head. “I wasn’t implying that you are a dog. I’m not that mean,” She mused a bit. “I was implying that you look like a dog. Major difference.”

Drew stopped walking and looked at Clare. “How dare you?” He snapped his fingers and walked away from her with a smile on his face. He burst out into laughter when he reached a street. He turned around to see Clare only halfway near him. Drew jogged back over to her. He nudged her a bit and smiled. “Next time I my leaave you for real.”

He looked to the side when she asked did he use the word munchkin. “No….are you alright Clare? You seem to be hearing things.” He gasped when she said he looked like a dog. “You resemble a cat then.”, he said with a bob of his neck.

Clare watched as the boy walked away from her and she playfully pouted, crossing her arms over her chest. Lazily walking behind him, she refused to run to him and when he made her way back, she huffed, “You’d leave a helpless girl in the streets all by herself? Where are your gentlemanly manners, Andrew?” She grinned a bit, but nudged him back.

“Cats are cuter than dogs. I’m cuddly and adorable while you have floppy ears and a big nose like most dogs,” Clare said matter of factly, smiling as she linked arms with Drew again. They were nearing the shelter but she was just having fun teasing her friend mindlessly, she barely noticed that their walk hadn’t taken that long.

jakeyjakem whispered, "Sorry for the lack of contact :) dad sprung a surprise trip up north on me and we took Max up, he enjoyed it. And the whole no signal thing made texting impossible. Missed you though ;)"

It’s okay! My mom told me about the surprise, I expected no less about the service. Missed you, too, though. <3

Lately Clare’s mom wasn’t getting home until rather early in the morning. Clare would awaken to hear the stumbles of her snickering mom and glance at the clock to realize how late it was. She wanted to get up and say something, ask what was going on, but she didn’t. Instead, the girl kept the…

Drew couldn’t sleep at night. Not since the incident. The day he was jumped by Vince’s goons. He couldn’t go anywhere without watching his back every so often. Afraid that they would finish what they started. If he did sleep he would wake-up due to a nightmare of him being stabbed to death or shot. Drew would awaken with a sweat stained body. His breaths short and unsteady. The only other person that knew about these were Adam. He was one of the only people he could trust at this point.

Hopping out of bed, Drew grasped his shirt off of the edge of the bed pulling it over his bed head. He slipped on his black vans and snagged his phone from on his desk. Drew wasn’t going to worry about anything tonight. The only thing that would be on his mind would be having fun. Not Bianca nor Vince. It was going to be about him and Clare. Sure it wasn’t safe but he would be prepared this time. Drew rummaged through his drawers until he found the cold, hard switchblade. If anyone were to try something on him, they would be in for a rude awakening.

Not wanting to wake his parents or Adam, Drew opened his window and slid down the pole. It was a quick and easy way for him to escape. Especially during times of punishment or if he needed to get away from home. Drew began to venture to Degrassi. He extracted his phone from his pocket, looking at the time. He was five minutes late. “Damn.”, he mumbled to himself. Drew shoved the phone back into his pocket. He started running not wanting to make Clare wait any longer. The school came into view causing Drew to slow down. He saw her and proceeded to walk over. “Clare.”, Drew said as he neared her.

Clare sat down on the steps, waiting for Drew’s arrival. Her mind drifted here and there. Recently her life seemed like a stupid soap opera. With her past forever tied to Eli and whoever he had become now, Clare went through her relationship with Jake always cautious and weary. It seemed her and her ex had come to a mutual agreement, though, to ignore each other. And as far as Clare was concerned, he seemed fine, moving onto the lead actress in his name-slandering play. ‘Whatever works for him,’ Clare’s mind droned on. But her thoughts were quickly interrupted when she heard her name being called.

Her eyes perked up and she saw a figure coming near her. Smirking, she stood up, putting on her best ‘man’ voice and mimicking the boy, “Yeah, Clare, I’ll be there in ten minutes, no big deal.” She laughed a bit at herself, shaking her head as she stepped down and met Drew at the bottom of the front steps of Degrassi. “Thanks for being late to our adventure time,” She said sarcastically, poking him in the arm. It was all in good fun though. She was ready to go exploring, thinking she was safer now that she had the strongest, most athletic Grade 11 boy by her side. Obviously she wasn’t aware of what he was dealing with, so his presence calmed her jumpy, anxious self as she smiled up at him. “So where exactly did you want to start this exploration?”

As soon as the words left his mouth, Drew looked around. Hoping that no unwanted attention was given. He was sure that Vince dealt around town. Drew was positive that no matter where he went someone was watching him. If it was Vince, the guys that nearly killed him, Bianca, his mom. There were always eyes on him. It bugged him to know that his life had taken a dramatic turn. Drew went from the top to the bottom. All because of one girl. All because of Bianca. It was as if he wasn’t meant to be happy.

Drew put a smile on his face to hide his paranoia. He didn’t need Clare thinking he was crazy too. Or did she already think that. Drew shook the negative thoughts out his head. He didn’t need that. Not at the moment. He watched as she stood up, attempting to do an impression of him. He laughed as she did so. “Ha ha. DO you know who my mom is? Imagine how hard it is to get out the house.” He shrugged when Clare asked where they should start. “I don’t really care. As long as were out. But didn’t you say you wanted a kitten. The whole reason why I’m here in the first place.” Drew smirked and stuck his tongue out at her. He was surprised the first word out her mouth wasn’t “Andrew.”

Something about the way Drew had presented himself seemed awkward and tense. His eyes looked manic as he searched the darkness for some kind of predator. Clare was going to say something, possibly ask him what was up, but when his eyes met hers and he smiled, she decided to let it go. Maybe she was just reading too much into simple body language that meant nothing. Rolling her eyes, she shrugged the moment off and stuck her tongue out right back.

“Well, I was going to give you a break from the kitty idea, since you seem oh so opposed,” Clare said as she began walking down the sidewalk. She figured Drew would mindlessly follow. Her initial plan was to just walk about Toronto and then finish off the adventure by going to the local shelter. “But now that you bring it up, I guess I’ll bring on the adorable kittens and pure torture early on.” She laughed a bit, turning to look over her shoulder. “Now hurry up before all the cute, small kittens are gone!”

Drew needed an activity to get his mind off of certain events. Maybe this would be good for him. Looking at adorable kittens and cute puppies. He needed a friend he could rely on. Someone he could talk to. He had always heard the saying that “A dog is a man’s best friend.” Drew didn’t quite believe it but the more he thought about it. The more it seemed like a good idea. Drew didn’t know how his mom would react but he didn’t care. She had been there for him however he needed to be there for himself.

Drew brought his shoulders up and then down again. “I actually want to. It wouldn’t be torture at all. I want to get a puppy. One that would be cuter than the one Jake got you.” Drew brought his hand to his mouth and whispered, “I’ve actually looked up what breeds are the cutest and how to take care of them.” He smiled as he pursued after her. This wouldn’t so bad after all. “I’m coming, I’m coming.” Drew playfully rolled his eyes at how impatient Clare was.

The idea of Drew actually being excited to go to the shelter made Clare that much more excited. She was a sucker for all types of animals, so when Drew admitted to wanting to get a puppy for himself, she was already thinking up names and wondering what the shelter had to offer him. Of course, his playful demeanor and way of scoffing at her and Jake’s puppy, Max, didn’t go unnoticed and when Drew caught up with her, she scoffed, lightly hitting him in the arm.

“Max is adorable, I doubt you’ll manage to find a puppy cuter than him,” Clare said, crossing her arms over her chest momentarily to sell her statement. She was still smiling though, completely aware it was all in good fun. “But I’m glad you’ve done your research. I still think mine and Jake’s little husky will beat out whatever type of dog you have in mind, but I’m interested. What breed did you have in mind?” Linking an innocent and friendly arm with Drew as she grinned, Clare picked up their slow pace, ready to see what the shelter had in store for them.

When Drew approached Clare he felt her hand against his arm. It didn’t hurt but he wanted to tease her about it. “Ouch.”, he exaggerated. “That hurt like hell.” Drew gave her a puppy dog face to go along with the charades. “Remind me to tell every one not to fuck with you.” He covered his mouth when he realized what had slipped off the tip of his tongue. His mother had taught him better than that. He quickly apologized for what had disclosed. “Sorry. I din’t mean to say that. At times I have such a bad sailor’s mouth.”

Drew listened as she blathered about Max. From the picture he had seen on tumblr it was a charming puppy. A husky to be exact. He sneered when she proclaimed that the puppy he would adopt would be cuter than her and Jake’s. He raised his eyebrows and glanced at her. “Yeah right.” Clare linked her arm with his and they began on their adventure. Drew scrunched up his face, looking up at the sky. “I was thinking about it but I haven’t truly decided. Maybe a red-nosed pitbull or a Yorkshire terrier.” They were perfect.
